In Brevard County, a housing crisis looms over many including those who seek refuge at Genesis House. One such resident is Brandi, a 30-year-old mother of a daughter, who journey to find stable housing illustrates the urgent need for affordable options in the area. Brandi arrived at Genesis House after a promise of support from a friend was unfulfilled. “I never thought I would end up in a shelter. I always worked hard to provide for my daughter, but the plan I had into place changed.”
Genesis House became a temporary haven for Brandi and her child, offering them safety and support as they navigate their next steps. However, Genesis House is not a long-term solution. She quickly started to work with her Genesis House Case Manager to obtain daycare, find employment and a permanent home for her family.
Brandi’s story is not unique. Housing prices in Brevard County have soared. A two bedroom apartment is priced, on average, at $1800. In order for anyone to qualify for these units a person must make three times the rent amount. In order for someone to qualify for a 2 bedroom apartment they must have a verifiable income of $5,400.00 a month. Based on a 40 hour work week, one would need to earn $31.15 an hour or $64,800.00 a year. Many Genesis House residents can’t manage a 40 hour work week when they have no transportation and must work around daycare hours. How can this be affordable or obtainable for any single parent?
Genesis House provides resources, including workshops on financial literacy, parenting, time management and thoroughly explains local housing assistance programs. Brandi participates in the Genesis House programs designed to connect residents with housing resources. She actively seeks advice from the Genesis House Case Manager and Mental Health Counselor building a support network that offers encouragement. Overcoming the challenges, Brandi and her precious daughter have secured their own apartment. Brandi said “I was humbled by living at Genesis House and learned the value of having support. Sometimes you just need some help.
